| The Bankside area was once a notoriously safe haven for pickpockets, prostitutes and that other godforsaken breed - playwrights. The area still drips with the same salty, devil-may-care atmosphere that inspired Burbage to build his playhouse here, rather than risk the wrath of those puritans north of the river. On this walk we visit the spot from which the pilgrims departed in the Canterbury Tales, see the site of the 'Bawdy Bishop's' Palace, shudder in the shadow of a prison which once housed Catholic priests, see the site of The Rose, The Globe, and even a ship. A fun, varied tour lasting approximately 2 hours. £5:00 per person Meets outside Borough Station |
